STARTING THE JOURNEY..

It is the summer of 2024. Piyush Gosh, a third-year student of English Honors at Calcutta University, is heading towards the National Library of Calcutta. It is his daily routine to go to the library, read a few fiction books, and return to his room in New Alipore. It was Friday, and Piyush was delighted as he had completed his 499th book. The new book he would take would be his 500th, so he wanted it to be special. With excitement, he reached the library and started searching, but he was unable to find a book that intrigued him. This was because he had read so many books that, just by looking at the title, he could guess the storyline. Now he was in the mood to return to his PG, but his inner self motivated him to try searching at least once more. After half an hour, he came across a book with no color or printing on the cover page. Even the author's name or publisher was not mentioned. The only thing written on it was "PART 1." This made Piyush a little curious. He turn...

Hello, hello, hello! I know the title sounds strange, but don’t worry—I’ll justify it soon. In 2017, I cleared my Sainik School entrance exam. I was overjoyed and eagerly waiting to join Sainik School Gopalganj. I spent my days packing my bags, buying the necessary items, and counting down to April 5th. The excitement was indescribable. After waiting for one month and eight days, the day finally arrived. My parents and I loaded our luggage into the car and began the journey to my new school. Throughout the trip, I couldn’t stop looking out the window, impatiently asking my father, “How much farther?” or “Where are we now?” He was visibly irritated but didn’t say much. After 3 hours and 28 minutes, we reached the school, and I was mesmerized. The campus looked incredible! While we waited outside the main entrance, I saw contingents of cadets marching toward the central parade ground for their morning assembly. Suddenly, they stopped, and a senior cadet with badges began inspecting ...

You know, writing and speaking are interconnected. If you can write well, with a little practice, you can eventually speak well too. Talking about myself, I wasn’t good at either of these. It doesn’t mean I am perfect now, but in Class 6, I was pathetic. Despite that, I always wanted to speak on stage in front of a large gathering—and you know what? My mother wanted it even more than me. While I was preparing for Sainik School, she had a habit of scrolling through the websites of various Sainik Schools, sometimes even watching YouTube videos about them. I still don’t know what happiness she found in doing it, and I never asked her. One day, while browsing through one of the websites, she came across a video of a Sainik School cadet giving a speech. She watched the whole video, and after it ended, she looked at me and asked, “Can you speak like him?” As a student of Class 5, what could I say? With full confidence, I replied, “Yes, of course, I will speak even better than him!” She...

School days are cherished forever. After completing school, there’s always a wish to relive those moments. Unfortunately, that isn’t possible. To revisit those memories, people do different things like organizing reunions, visiting their schools with friends, or scrolling through old photos in their phone galleries. If you’ve lived in a boarding school, those memories become even more special. At the beginning of school, you cry because you’re separated from your loving parents, and at the end, your eyes are wet again as you part from your brothers (friends). One such incident happened to me when I first joined Sainik School.  It was my first time living in a hostel, and surprisingly, I wasn’t homesick at all. I was so excited and engaged that all I wanted was to reach the dorms quickly, meet my new friends, and see what life at Sainik School was really like. Until then, I had only heard that life there would be tough, that discipline was the most important thing, and that b...
